"14 gauge is the absolute minimum steel thickness to accept for any gate frame from any fabricator, and even that's nothing to brag about.  Ask questions; make them to spec the material being used for every part of the gate, from frame, to sub-framing, to pickets, to finials, to hinges.  Also, if they mention using plastic on any part of the gate, I suggest finding another contractor, because it's a reflection of being cheap and low in their quality standards, which will also manifest itself in others ways you'll likely eventually regret later on."
